Chapter Eleven

“I asked Barbara to let everyone in the house with the key she has. I need her to get the casseroles in the oven. They should be there by the time we get home,” Hilda said.

Nathan pulled into the driveway. Making her way to the front door. Autumn saw something sticking out of the mailbox. She went to grab it, but Nathan stopped her. He grabbed gloves and removed the letter. Doug and the book club ladies were already inside waiting for them. Nathan opened the note and read it aloud.

“I’ll take this in a bit and see if we can get any fingerprints or other clues on it. Does it have a faint smell to it?” Nathan asked as he took it around to each person.

“It smells a bit like a bluebonnet,” Ruth suggested.

“Yes, I agree. Too bad it isn’t something more specific. Those are all over Texas, so that doesn’t help narrow the search,” Hilda said with a sad sigh.

“Yup we just got a shipment in at the market. The Fergusons’ have a special hardy variation that they’ve been growing at the nursery.”

The oven timer sounded. Autumn took out the casseroles.

“No need to make things more complicated with more dishes,” Julie said as she passed out the paper plates and utensils. Everyone nodded, grabbed a plate, and began filling them up.

“Okay, who wants to go first with what they learned today, so we can see where we are and make a plan as to where to go from here?” Autumn asked.

Nathan filled the group in on their part of the investigation first.

“Brad was a creep. I wouldn’t want Thora to ever be near him because he is overly obsessed. I don’t, however, think he is the kidnapping type. Also, I don’t like that the letter was addressed to all of us. Someone must have seen or overheard us today and not liked all the questions we were asking. We will have to be more cautious.”

The group mumbled in agreement.

Have you heard anything back from the evidence we collected from Doug’s place and the road the other day, Nathan?” Autumn asked.

“Yes and no. The evidence from the warehouse did come back. The nails all over the driveway are standard and can be purchased anywhere. I called the local hardware store and had them send over a list of anyone that has bought nails that size recently, but I am still waiting to hear back from them.

“The white pill residue came back as Rohypnol. It lowers inhibition and impairs memories when ingested and the effects last several hours. Sometimes, victims never retrieve those memories,” Nathan said.

“I am glad they told us she is well and that they will send more instructions tomorrow. That must mean they have a plan and need Thora alive for it. Right?” Autumn asked. Nathan nodded.

Doug rubbed his face. Tension lined his face, he seemed to age overnight.

“I don’t think the brothers had anything to do with this.
